Sunny Afro is a burst of sunshine in bloom, with flowers in her hair and a whole field of sunflowers celebrating her glow.
While creating this illustration, I reflected on the aftermath of the BLM movement. I had previously made another piece during the height of the movement and the COVID-19 pandemic, which served as the inspiration for this work. Unlike the darker, heavier emotions of that time, this illustration carries a brighter, lighter feeling. It reflects the sense of empowerment I now feel as a Black woman, at a moment when Black voices are being recognized and heard. This image is the result of those emotions and experiences.
